On November 6, 1851, Major Abercrombie left Camp Belknap with 231 men in five companies of the Fifth Infantry. They were accompanied by fifty horses, plus mules and oxen to build the second fort in the new line of defense. For the second stage of the expedition, Abercrombie secured the services of Black Beaver, Chief of the Delaware Indians, as a guide. Black Beaver, a guide for the previous Marcy Expedition, was widely regarded as dependable and familiar with the territory.
