On November 9, 1962, the top song in America was “He’s a Rebel” by The Crystals. The Crystals did not sing on the record. In an effort to get the record pressed and on the street before Vikki Carr released her version of “He’s a Rebel,” producer Phil Spector used a trio of backup singers known as the Blossoms to make the recording. The Blossoms’ lead singer, Darlene Love, would later make it to the Top 40 as a soloist. The percussionist on “He’s a Rebel” was Sonny Bono.
