On Oct. 5, the GVO will present Elgars glorious Enigma Variations. Here is a 1926 recording, conducted by the composer. There is an object lesson here for anyone who thinks a composers tempo markings should be religiously followed. Elgar takes all the fast variations considerably quicker than his own metronome markings would dictate. And then there is the stately Nimrod variation (at 12:01 on the recording). It is marked quarter note = 52. Elgar begins Nimrod way down at about 40. But -- as an example of his flexibility of tempo as a conductor -- he gradually accelerates it to 56! https://youtube/watch?v=kaPtKoL-FsM
