On October 11, I posted some thoughts on why the Spanish were so slow and hesitant to support the patriot cause during the American Revolution. I listed two reasons that I have come across but, have since come across a third reason...the extreme animosity that existed between the Spanish Army and Navy during the 18th century. I do not know much about this but, ran across the information in a book entitled, The Final Campaign of the American Revolution by James Lewis, PhD. Evidently, both branches of the military forces of Spain was suspicious of the other one seeking to gain advantage over them and, as a direct result, spent an inordinate amount of time, effort and correspondence trying to wreck the reputation of the other one. Each branch played power games with the other one through rumor, innuendo, backbiting, and character-assassinations. It is amazing to me to think that entire military operations were deliberately botched by one branch in fear that the other branch would gain an unfair advantage.
