On October 15, 1946 a young man was born in New Haven Conecticut. He learned to play the piano and his family moved to Downey, California in 1963. He formed a band with his sister and a friend and won The Battle of the Bands at the Hollywood Bowl in 1966. He then studied music at Cal State University - Long Beach (probably the same time as Steven Spielberg) and formed another group called Spectrum. In 1969 he signed his first contract with A&M Records with his sister and the world was introduced to The Carpenters. Today is Richard Carpenters birthday. Richard never forgot his days at CSU Long Beach. The Performing Arts Center is named after them and is a Carpenters museum. Another fun info concerns the song Weve Only Just Begun. Richard was watching TV one night and saw a commercial for Crocker Bank (which eventually was bought by Wells Fargo). Richard liked the idea of the song, found out it was written and performed by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols and reworked it and made it a hit record making it all the way to number 2 on the charts and on the Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. So Happy Birthday Mr. Carpenter. I hope you are on Top of the World. https://youtube/watch?v=__VQX2Xn7tI
