On October 23, 2014, the Uwchlan Township Police Department was advised that a subject had come to the Upper Uwchlan Township Police Station with a suspicious device in his vehicle. According to the subject, the device had originally been found at the Goodwill Industries Store, located at 45 Marchwood Road, in Uwchlan Township. When the subject was interviewed, he indicated that he is a Regional Security Manager for Goodwill Industries and that he had visited the Marchwood Store this morning. While there, a store employee turned over to him a device that was suspicious in appearance. The employee was not able to identify what the item was, how long it had been at the store or how it was received. The security officer then elected to take the item from the store and to, what he believed was, the correct police station. The Upper Uwchlan Township Police Department investigated the device, and with the assistance of the Montgomery County Bomb Squad, it was able to determine that the item was a marine beacon device. During the course of the incident, and before the device was identified, the Uwchlan Township Police Department responded to the Goodwill Store and, in order to error on the side of safety, closed and evacuated the store. Canine units from the Chester County Sheriff’s Department responded with dogs to search the store. The subsequent search of the store resulted in the dogs reacting positively to a package in the store. The Montgomery County Bomb Squad then responded to the store and searched several packages inside of the store. It was determined that the dogs had reacted to a tube of glue that had been included in a bag of donated clothing. Once the search was completed, the store was reopened.
