On October 29 we got quite a surprise when walking into what we thought to be just another class at Monarch Academy. As we pulled up to the school, various personnel ranging from school administrators, government officials, police officers, and firemen were dispersed around the school’s campus. Among the mass was Monarch Academy’s principal, Sundai Riggins, who informed us that the reason for the commotion was due to the school’s most recent addition of a brand new playground. Sundai and various other educators and administrators put together a warm inclusive ceremonial ribbon cutting after school and honored all the volunteers and businesses that made this playground a reality. One of the spokespeople at the celebration was Baltimore City’s own Mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake whose description of “the power of play” became the theme of the celebration. Many words of praise and thanks floated from person to person as each speaker spoke about how this new addition to Monarch Academy is going to not only expand the students’ physical bodies but also expand their minds through guided play.
