On October 4, 1957, the Russians launched Sputnik: the world’s first manmade satellite. The launch sparked the beginning of the Space Race, in which the USA and USSR competed for achievements in space exploration. Sputnik provided information about the upper atmosphere from its low Earth orbit. Its mission lasted 90 days, and it made approximately 1,400 orbits around the Earth.
