“On Okinawa” Exhibition Spotlight: Kimonos from the Okinawa - TopicsExpress

“On Okinawa” Exhibition Spotlight: Kimonos from the Okinawa Collection of the Ethnological Museum – For the exhibition space, along with a consideration of the historical context, I remained conscious of the energy and rhythm of the dyed colors. Creating a consistency of rhythm and patterns from the past and present became my focus, along with reflecting on how the traditional materials relate to contemporary issues. From the historical collection, I chose a total of five kimonos: three Basho fiber kimonos and two Bingata cotton kimonos. I also selected two caps (one belonging to an aristocrat and one from an officer), two fans, one hymn, one poem and a ceremonial table. These historical works are juxtaposed with my own three recent Bingata dyed works.
