On Saturday May 10, 2014, Trooper Lawrence Rose attended the funeral of Sgt. Scott Johnson and Trooper Gabe Rich of the Alaska State Troopers The service was held at the Carlson Center in the city of Fairbanks. Trooper Rose was also a former resident of Fairbanks, AK. Multiple State Police agencies from around the country and Canada attended the service. Airfare for the trip was provided by the Maine State Troopers Association at no cost to the taxpayers. The Troopers were shot and killed attempting to serve an arrest warrant in a remote village in the Tanana Valley of Alaska. They were attempting to arrest Arvin Kangas for charges of operating without a license and threatening the village public safety officer with a rifle. Arvin Kangas resisted arrest and tried to get back in his house. Sgt. Johnson and Trooper Rich attempted to keep Arvin Kangas from going back to his house. Nathanial Kangas, son of Arvin Kangas, emerged from the residence with a rifle while the Troopers struggled with his father. Nathanial Kangas fired seven shots into the backs of Sgt. Johnson and Trooper Rich. Nathanial Kangas was arrested and indicted by the Fairbanks grand jury for two charges of first-degree murder.
