On Saturday the Lions travelled to the Paviors club from Nottingham for their penultimate away game Paviors gave the Lions a scare back in November, after a strong start by the Lions, with the result seeing the Lions only run out by 8 points, their lowest at home this season. Naturally the Paviors fancied their chances in this one. Paviors kicked off the game towards the Lions and had the upper hand for the first 20 minutes, putting the Lions under pressure in the scrum, open play whilst also having the territorial advantage. The first score of the game came from the first bout of Lions pressure. A penalty from the right hand side of the pitch was landed by Fly Half Jaco Steenberg, after the hosts were caught off side. The Lions lead was to be short-lived, as the Paviors found space out wide moving the ball between the outside backs nicely. The score came from their right winger cutting in against the grain of the Lions defence to score next to the posts. Their fly half converted. Paviors were justifiably ahead at 7-3 and this started to spring the Lions into life. The mistakes and penalty count decreased and the Lions managed to maintain possession for the first time in the game. On the stroke of half time, Inside Centre Duncan Low who was returning for his first start in 5 games, since injuring his ankle in year 9 basketball at school, found a gap in the Paviors defence after phased build up play. Steenberg missing the conversion. Half time score: Paviors 7 - 8 Peterborough Lions. The Lions received the kick off in the second half with the one point advantage maintained in an even 40-50 minute interval. Then came a flurry of Lions tries. The first score was by Lions right Winger Vernon Horne, who finished off what has become a signature bump 2 and fend 2 50 meter sprint in. This was closely followed up by Full Back Reggie Reid., Horne feeding him on this occasion. This time Reid outflanking the cover defence and attacking the inside shoulder of the final defender. Low with the conversion. The final Lions try came from good build up play again. Maksim Guseinov, returning from a long injury period, found himself operating in the midfield following strong carries by the forwards including the tireless Arta Bal. Guseinov taking play up to the Paviors 5 meter line, ably helped by Lions Captain and Openside Chris Humphrey, who ripped the ball off Guseinov 2 meters from the Paviors line to touch down himself. Low with the conversion. The Paviors scored another try of their own, following a slip in the defensive line by substitute Laurent Ross. Final score Paviors 12 - 31 Peterborough Lions. If results go their way, the Lions could well be in a position to win the Midlands 1 East title at home to Kettering on Saturday 22nd March. All eyes will be on the mid week Derby score and the fixture on the 15th March. Man of the Match - Arta Bal
