On September 12, 1962, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a speech in New York City to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the issuance of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. King would later go on to borrow directly from this speech when delivering his most famous I Have A Dream speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial a little less than a year later in 1963. The New York State Museum has the only known recording of the event- listen to the speech and read related documents at nysm.nysed.gov/mlk/
