On September 17, the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Board - TopicsExpress

On September 17, the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (MassABOTA) will hold its seventh annual James Otis Lecture at Faneuil Hall in Boston. The program is tailored to high school students and is free and open to every high school in Massachusetts. This year our topic is Magna Carta in anticipation of the 800th anniversary of the Great Charter sealed at Runnymede in June of 1215. We have two world renowned experts on Magna Carta, Sir Robert Worcester, KBE, the Chair of the 800th Anniversary Trust Committee in London, and Professor A.E. Dick Howard from the University of Virginia School of Law, who has published and spoken extensively on Magna Carta and its influence on American constitutional development and culture. Each panelist will deliver a brief address on a topic related to Magna Carta (perhaps 20 minutes in length) after which there will be a question-and-answer session in which the students can address their questions directly to the panelists. Central to the program will be a discussion of how Magna Carta is relevant to the world today, 800 years after it was forced upon an unwilling King John in a field outside of London by a group of recalcitrant barons. Students are encouraged to come prepared with questions and to participate actively in the discussion. The program will be taped by WGBH and may be used in producing a Learning Media piece in the future. It is not often that students have a chance to hear from, and interact with, experts like these. A copy of a brochure outlining the program is attached as well as a nomination form for your students. Registration will begin at 11:30 am and the program will run from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. This is a unique opportunity for Massachusetts high school students and I really hope to see students from your school at the program. Perhaps you might like to join them, too.
