On Sunday, September 22, seven members of the Awaiting Dawn team joined others from International High School to spend an all day artistic “field trip” on Angel Island. Organized by MOMA and led by artist, Aaron Gach (co-founder of the Center for Tactical Magic), the day of site-specific discussions and presentations explored the “Politics of Abstraction and the Abstraction of Politics.” For our team, delving into the theme of “war” and seeking new forms/forums at the crossroads of arts, education and civic life, it was an incredibly rich, thought-provoking day. The setting itself brought home the themes of our projects, as San Francisco Bay’s Angel Island (now a state park) has served as a Civil War outpost, a US Immigration Station, a Prisoner of War Processing Center and a Nike missile site. Gach asked, “How do these rich historical narratives connect to current social debates?” Presenters included an art historian, an investigative journalist, a former military remote viewer, and a former NSA analyst and a data visualizer who presented data on Drone Attacks and his (rejected) app to bring information of drone attacks into the intimate world of the iPhone screen.
