On Sunday night January 16, 1994 an off-duty firefighter checked the flashlight in his bedroom at home before going to sleep. It was a weekly ritual to make sure the flashlight was still there and that the batteries still had adequate juice. At 4:31 the next morning the Northridge earthquake rocked Southern California, becoming the costliest natural disaster in US history at tht time. His flashlight worked, but those of many others did not. This is a good time to start a new ritual. Just make sure the light you choose for the bedroom is spark-free. Ordinary utility flashlights are not.
