On Sunday, we celebrated the one-year anniversary of our move to Arden. In honor of that milestone, I wanted to write to you all a Shakespearean sonnet. After all, the village was named for a locale of a Shakespeare play. But alas, although I am a writer and have even read an original poem at Poetry Gild, the iambic metering is not my forte. Actually I lack any kind of rhythm. (Mark never lets me participate in any kind of synchronized clapping). Never mind. In Arden, I came to drumming circle, and Allen and friends welcomed me and my off-beat. I suppose it didn’t hurt that I brought leftover apple cider sangria. Do you really want me to list all the ways we found community here? Ivy pulling, meditation, banner making, fiber arts, art exhibits, parties, early morning walks, comedy shows, beer appreciation, concerts, DOG theater, book club, the secret bandying about of women in the woods, the fair, gARDENing, dinner gild, hiking, the pool, pancakes. This is only the short list and Shakespearean sonnets only have fourteen lines. So you see? I couldn’t possibly contain myself to that form even if I had the rhythm of______ (Quick, Ron Ozer, supply me with the name of a badass percussionist). But more than all the liveliness and doings, it is the people we have met and friends we have made who have made this adventure the absolute right move for us. You are all more than neighbors. Thank you for welcoming us into your fold, accepting us for who we are and simultaneously helping us grow. We are looking forward to many more years under this great, green canopy.
