On Sunday, we watched a 60 Minutes report about the state of the water. It’s endangered, and overtaxed, the aquifers getting tapped out with no return possible if the rate of extraction continues. Today’s headlines shouted out that sea stars are dying horribly under the sea all along the west coast and polar bears are in a 40% decline. Habitat is under siege and therefore all the creatures – including the two-leggeds – are in danger of dying out in the name of greed. Out in the Black Hills of South Dakota, the place where I was born, the people of the Rosebud Sioux have said that the proposed pipeline would be considered an act of war against them. They are a sovereign nation, and – as they have ever been - guardians of Mother Earth. The Ogallala aquifer – the largest fresh water aquifer – lies beneath the proposed path of the pipeline, endangering all who live above and below, threatening a way of life that has nothing to do with the well-being of anyone or anything. Except for those who would profit from piping the tar sands, it would do no one good. A few jobs at first might occur, but then, only a few would maintain this long and dangerous pipeline. It doesn’t belong there or anywhere. It’s water we need, not more oil. We can change our thirst for oil, but not our thirst for water. Water is our birthright, and it is an act of war to greedily force this pipeline upon people who do not want it, will never want it, and who will fight for the right of water to remain safe. Let us stand with the People of the Rosebud, the People of the Earth, let us stand by and for the water.
