On Thanksgiving ask yourself the hard question of why you are - TopicsExpress

On Thanksgiving ask yourself the hard question of why you are volunteering, if it is truly to help others, then you might want to pick another day. If you are planning to deliver meals or help in a homeless shelter this Thanksgiving, good for you, that is a nice thing to do. One suggestion. Thanksgiving Day is actually the day of the year when shelters need the LEAST help - generosity and holiday spirt actually creates way more food and way more volunteers than is needed....likely by a factor of ten. Most homeless shelters will not say no to help of course and none would want to turn someone who volunteers away - but this one particular day, the help might not be most effective. If you REALLY want to help and are doing this for the people in need, not for yourself, then instead of helping on Thanksgiving, use that holiday to save some food, put some canned goods aside, maybe take up a collection from your family members and enlist some volunteers.... then wait. Wait until Super Bowl Sunday or the most wonderful Saturday in June or wait until another day when absolutely no one feels like volunteering at a shelter and no one is thinking of it....wait until that day and offer help. Be cautious of helping when its more about your desires or image of what is helpful than what is actually helpful. Those who are hungry need help 365 days a year.
