On This Day: In 1825 the US Congress approved “Indian Territory” in what is present-day Oklahoma, clearing the way for forced relocation of Native peoples from the east on the Trail of Tears. The Trail of Tears is a name given to the forced relocation and movement of Native American nations from southeastern parts of the United States following the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The removal included many members of the Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Osage, Sac & Fox, Kickapoo, Miami, Pawnee, Ponca nations, among others in the United States, from their homelands. Over 46,000 Native Americans were forcibly removed from their homelands, and over 10,000 died during the removal process.
