On This Day: March 12 On March 12, 1947, President Truman established what became known as the Truman Doctrine to help Greece and Turkey resist Communism. On March 12, 1858, Adolph Simon Ochs, the American publisher who built The New York Times into one of the worlds top newspapers, was born.
