On Thursday, I received notice from my contractor (who is working on a completely different part of the house) that the town of Cary would not let them proceed without a permit for the replacement of my shed. On Friday, I went to town hall with my money in hand and the permit application for an accessory building. I assumed that I would need only the documents indicating the location of the construction like when I got the permit for my daughters accessory building in Greensboro. Oh, no! I was informed that I needed detailed construction plans for them to review. What I had was no where near what they needed. I told them that I had a pictures on my phone of the work that was almost as good as engineering drawings, but was informed that that was not sufficient. They said that every day there is an expedited plan review which usually takes about an hour if all of the required material is available. I have used one and a half days to duplicate what I have constructed but on paper at a scale of 1 = 1. Except for dimensions and call-outs for materials used, the attached photographs are almost equivalent. I dont know whether I should be thankful that the good people in the construction planning department are insuring that no fly by night gypsies construct sub standard buildings in the fair city or should be irritated for the lower customer focus. I think I realize the frustration contractors exude when they learn that doing work at my house is like doing work in Cary. I will take off Monday, to be in line with my ten pages of construction application documents (plot plan, left side wall, right side wall, front wall, roof truss installation, roof truss engineering design, Cary construction application, notarized owner construction notice, printed photographs, etc.). I hope that I dont get told to bring an engineering certification that some component requires a PE stamp. I have lost two days of work time, not to mention the time the other contractor has lost.
