On Thursday, I recommended collecting some of your childs favorite objects from nature while on a walk. Bring the objects home and create a story. Put the objects on the floor or table and ask your child to get his/her favorite character. For example, if your child loves Elsa from Frozen then they might create a story about Elsa. Its important for children to make up stories using their imagination. This requires them to use language, relate the information they know about the world, sequence events, and maintain a cohesive thought. Props from nature are a great way to start. Imagine your childs story about how Elsa ran through dandelions and had a squirrel deliver an acorn. Mix up the objects and a new story can be easily created. Children around 5 or 6 often love this activity. Even young children, around 2 or 3 can easily participate in this activity. You can model sentences like, Thomas went walking. He saw a ... and (your child fills in the word). ~Marena Mitchell, Speech-Language Pathologist bringingtherapyhome
