On Thursday October 09, 2014 fire ripped through the Kya Sands informal settlement reportedly affecting more than 800 shack dwellings and leaving more than 2000 people affected. Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund Donor Relations Manager Mpaki Pule said Community response has been commendable with the able co-ordination by Juda Africa Church serving as a distribution point for relief assistance. Meals cooked on site was provided by Caroline Tshepe from Care and Excellent Development Centre. Government response was prompt with Department of Home Affairs assisting with lost Identity Documents, Department of Social Development on hand with food parcels, South African Police Services stationed 24 hours and City of Johannesburg Public Safety Department. Additional support came from business community as well as Gift of the Givers. World Vision has extended voice of appeal to the Corporate sector. On her visit to Kya Sands on Monday October 13, 2014, Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund CEO Sibongile Mkhabela highlighted need for school uniforms and stationery for school-going children. Mkhabela thanked all for giving a helping hand to the Kya Sands community.
