On Tuesday of last week, I woke up at 6:45AM. I remember feeling tried but nothing felt strange or out of the ordinary. At 7:30, I put Cyrus and Mitra in the car to take them to school. As I sat down in the driver seat, a wave moved through my head and chest like someone had pushed a rolling pin over me. Every pore in my body opened up and covered me in sweat. In seconds, a feeling of stiffness in my back grew from a round jab to a metal vice crushing my insides. I looked in the rearview mirror to see that my face had no color in it and my pupils were completely dilated. I must have sounded serious because the kids got out without a compliant. As I walked them back inside my vision began to blur and their voices became muffled. I told Roxanne it was a Kidney Stone. When she asked if I was sure, I told her there was not doubt in my mind. I spent the next half an hour alternating between the bed and the bathroom floor clinging to the toilet expecting to vomit. Roxanne said her Dad had the kids and she was taking me to the ER. The 5 South was packed with morning gridlock. Rox dogged bits of tire and wood in the emergency lane all the way there. At this point the pain only allowed me to swear in little bursts. The nurse let me right in after I puked in her wastepaper basket. Another nurse stabbed an IV in my arm while still another loaded it with Diluadid. The drug swept over me in seconds, completely erasing the issue. The dramatic shift was both instantaneous and incredible.
