On Wednesday, January 8, 2014, Albertas new Human Services Minister, The Honourable Manmeet Bhullar, announced a new five-point plan for improving the child intervention system. The five-point plan focuses on enhancing information sharing, addressing the root causes that bring children into care, and supporting collaborative research to improve services to children and their families. The Alberta Centre for Child, Family and Community Research and the Child Welfare League of Canada will be reviewing data related to children known to the Ministry who died between 1999 and 2013. The two organizations will provide recommendations at a January 2014 Child Intervention Roundtable based on an inter-jurisdictional review on best practices for sharing this information publicly, while respecting the sensitive nature of the data and privacy of the individuals involved. While in-person attendance is by invite only, the roundtable will be webcast for the public.
