On a Monday (traditionally the busiest day in the ER), a patient - TopicsExpress

On a Monday (traditionally the busiest day in the ER), a patient is led to a hallway bed to wait to be seen. Patient: Excuse me, nurse? Me: Yes? Patient: I think theres been a mistake; we have insurance (pointing to the hallway bed). Me: Ooohhh! What brought you in? Patient: My toes hurts. Me: For how long? Patient: About a month. Me: Did you see your primary doctor? Patient: Well, I didnt want to wait for an appointment. Sometimes it takes a week to see him. Me: So what changed today? Patient: Well...nothing, but I figured if I came to the ER I would be seen faster. Me: So a problem that you have allowed to continue for 1 month without even a phone call to your doctor and unchanged today now warrants a visit to the ER where you expect your sore toe will warrant being seen faster and being placed in a room on the busiest day of the week instead a stroke or heart attack patient because...you have insurance? Patient: (Stares blankly). Me: The doctor will see you here shortly.
