On a cold, windy Saturday morning in the depth of winter in January 2004 -10 years and eleven months ago, I gave a ride to a friend visiting from Northern California to buy African groceries in Down Town Los Angeles. At the shop at that same time was a family friend of ours who was also escorted to the shop by this quite, calm beauty. I was passing through a major turbulence in my life and I thought- this could be the peace I was seeking for. I asked for her number and she refused and instead gave me her uncle’s number. What followed was three years and 11 months of major twists and turns of wooing this deeply spiritual woman- with a radiant external beauty but a deep calm, steely resolve- on the inside. I persevered because I learnt very early in our relationship that you could take Mercy’s word to the bank- and the check will never return unpaid because of insufficient funds! God help you too if she says no to an issue! Finally on that harmattan hazed morning seven years ago today, oblivious of all the distant cacophony of sounds that is Lagos Nigeria, she said “I do”. Mercy is my peace. My new found faith in God and her calm quite demeanor and sometimes stubborn steely resolve- brought calm and peace into my world that was tupsy turvy in those sad years leading up to January 2014. Anybody who knows me well knew the raging waves I was riding in those years and how Mercy brought a firm anchor to this – journey weary rugged sailor!! On this 7th anniversary of our union I want to let you know that you mean the world to me- and sometimes when people ask me how I am able to do all I do, I tell them that it is because I have peace! I pledge my eternal love to you, Nwanne mmadu, Osodieme, the sugar in my tea and the only mosquito in my net! You will always be my love, my all and the wing beneath my wings!! https://youtube/watch?v=jorJh8DTMVM
