On a recent stopover in NYC, I had a chance to do a bunch of rides with New Yorks one year old Citi bike-share. I hadnt been to NY in several years. The transformation of the city to a more walkable, rideable place, was astonishing. This is in large part to the vision of former Dept of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. Under her tenure, the number of bike lanes and sharrow routes went from 29 miles to 254 miles in New York City. She created separated bike lanes on some major avenues, numerous pedestrian plazas (most notably along Broadway), and most of all the CitiBike program. New York has changed for the better in the last few years, if youre headed there and plan on spending time in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn definitely get a pass for the bikes, you wont be disappointed.
