On a tour in California, in 1977-78, we took a day and went to see some shows being taped. One was the Tonight Show and one was the Midnight Special hosted by Wolfman Jack (Paul Bryant). Willie Nelson was on stage with Joe Cocker doing take after take of Whiskey River. Ironically Joe was too drunk to sing it, so they gave up. Afterward, Joe went and sat down on the floor up against a wall. I was 18 and an excited baby Christian, so I just went over and sat down right next to Joe Cocker, introduced myself, and proceeded to tell him all about Jesus and the plan of salvation. He listened, grunted and nodded at times. When it was over, Joe in slurred speech, and a surprisingly thick British accent, said, Dave, my boy, although I do appreciate your passion and courage, the last thing I need right now is schoolboy philosophy. He shook my hand and I thanked him for listening and I went back over to where my bandmates were. Joe Cocker died today of lung cancer. May he rest in peace.
