On another Note ... ;) I have heard a lot of brouhaha lately on Christian radio and television about the judgement of God descending upon us [The United States] because of our sins. This judgement seems to be in the form of weather patterns and financial calamity. I certainly hope we are not going to credit God with our financial house of taxing and spending. My thoughts are always exactly the same when I hear such foreboding, Did evil begin with us? Will it end with us? Do you know what sin we are collectively guilty of more than any other sin? It is the sin of PRIDE and self-adsorbing. The sin I see underneath the paleolithic paint of reasoning, and theories, and rhetorical prognostications, declared profoundly by these end time preachers - just perhaps may be the sin of pride. We are just so full of ourselves and cannot see it clearly. We are all so hubristic in our theology, eschatology, and doctrine. WE are the last generation. WE are the witnesses of the end times on earth. It is smothering on the snarled lips of ministers around the world so declaratively proclaimed. It is always uttered with utmost conviction and power as if it was never given thought about from generations past. We are Gods chosen ones. We are the worm that is turned and packing an Uzi. It is tainted into our blood streams. We carry around a sword in our hearts, and cannot even begin to enjoy the life we have as we did when we were younger, because God is angry and ready to wrap this all up before we die. And somehow, beneath the rhetoric and aggrandizing, we have the basic sin of pride - thinking it is all about us - as millions and billions before have hermetically reasoned. What have and what will we forfeit in our lives, our childrens lives, as we guide them through the process of preparedness for the end of times? What are we exchanging in the process? We are stealing their joy and hope for we believe they do not have a say in the future of our country. Grab your swords and get your guns as we are ready to cut down our fellow neighbors for they sin differently than we do. It must be worse sins because we are good people and they are not. They do not respect, or understand, this form of Christianity - they fear it demonstratively. They fear it because the ending is always apoplectic in nature. We cannot even enjoy a good thunderstorm because it is a sign from heavens of our sins. Have we really transformed that far from Witch Doctors and Voo Doo dolls? We toil and sweat about many things we should not. And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? And why are you worried about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.… You can only sleep in one bed at a time, drive one car at a time, eat one meal at a time, and if our beds are made of purest gold and we cannot sleep - what profit is there? There are many things people toil about and do not need. Our people are losing that faith, not only in government itself but in the ability as citizens to serve as the ultimate rulers and shapers of our democracy. As a people we know our past and we are proud of it. Our progress has been part of the living history of America, even the world. We always believed that we were part of a great movement of humanity itself called democracy, involved in the search for freedom, and that belief has always strengthened us in our purpose. But just as we are losing our confidence in the future, we are also beginning to close the door on our past. In a nation that was proud of hard work, strong families, close-knit communities, and our faith in God, too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption. Human identity is no longer defined by what one does, but by what one owns.
