On behalf of The Norman Spruill House Foundation and in our on-going efforts to help end homelessness. We have partnered with the Atlanta Continuum-of-Care. For those volunteers who are interested in volunteering please see the following announcement notice below and CLICK on the link below to register. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Atlanta Continuum-of-Care will conduct its Homeless Point-In-Time (PIT) Homeless Count on January 22-23, 2015. We need over 400 volunteers that night and in the week following to make the PIT Homeless Count a success and to help eliminate homelessness in Atlanta. The PIT Count gives the City and its partner Agencies valuable demographic information on the homeless population that makes it possible to strategically target resources for optimal results. We also have additional day shifts January 24th-29th. This year the City of Atlanta homeless census will be slightly different. In this Count, volunteers will work with trained professionals from the Atlanta Service Provider Agencies and the Atlanta Police Department HOPE and COPS teams to administer surveys to our citizens experiencing homelessness. We will be surveying the unsheltered homeless who are sleeping in outdoor locations such as sidewalks, parks, encampments and under bridges. The surveys provide demographic information on, on each individuals homeless history, needs and other vital information that enables the Continuum to effectively plan housing and service interventions to prevent and end homelessness in Atlanta. This year special focus will be placed on Veterans experiencing homelessness as our Mayor Kasim Reed has committed to meeting the National goal of ending Veteran homelessness by 2015 We will also have aspects of the count focused on single women with children, LGBT youth, and other unsheltered homeless who are sleeping in outdoor locations such as sidewalks, parks, encampments and under bridges. Also included in the PIT Count will be all of the sheltered homeless, who are staying in emergency shelters and transitional housing programs. All of these groups make up a significant portion of chronic homelessness, and those who are the most vulnerable to homelessness. In addition to general volunteers, we especially need help from our dedicated homeless service providers to serve as team leaders and to help administer the VI-SPDAT. Please encourage your staff to volunteer and sign up to be team leads. If your agency is able to volunteer any vans to help transport teams the night of the count we would also very much appreciate it! As you all know, the homeless count is crucial for tracking the success of local efforts to end homelessness in Atlanta and essential for planning future efforts. Your efforts will help to identify these vulnerable groups by conducting surveys that provide demographic characteristics, homeless history, homeless experiences, and other vital information. The homeless count is crucial for meeting federal requirements to continue receiving over $10 million for homeless services, attracting philanthropic investors and for tracking the success of local efforts to end homelessness in Metro Atlanta.
