On behalf of the Association of Literary Scholars, Critics and Writers (ALSCW), I am organizing a panel session on rhetoric and Asian American poetry. I thought you might be interested in the call for papers, or know people who are. Rhetoric and Asian American Poetry Asian American poetry is often considered simply as poetry by Asian Americans, or defined naively as poetry with Asian American content. Less well known, less well understood, is the rhetorical sophistication of Asian American poets such as Lawson Fusao Inada, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, and John Yau in crafting their poems. That aesthetic forms are closely linked to their historical contexts is the argument of a forthcoming book by scholar Dorothy Wang, Thinking Its Presence: Form, Race, and Subjectivity in Contemporary Asian American Poetry. The papers for this panel will examine the linguistic and rhetorical strategies of a major Asian American poet, or trace the use of a particular strategy (metaphor, irony, parody, etcetera) across the work of several poets. Also welcomed are papers on Asian poets writing in English, which can lend a comparative perspective to the panel. The ALSCW seeks to promote excellence in literary criticism and scholarship, and works to ensure that literature thrives in both scholarly and creative environments. We encourage the reading and writing of literature, criticism, and scholarship, as well as wide-ranging discussions among those committed to the reading and study of literary works. To support its mission, the association organizes an annual conference and publishes a journal called Literary Imagination. Next years twentieth conference will be held at Indiana University, April 3-6, 2014. Please note: everybody who participates must be a current member of the ALSCW.
