On fake meats and cheeses: One of the reasons that I do not like all the fake meat/cheese stuff is that I think we need to get away from the idea that we can go vegan only if we can find substitutes for animal foods. I often hear people say, oh, I would go vegan if I could only find a good vegan cheese or something like that. In any event, we need to see this as a matter of fundamental morality. Bottom line: if you choose to eat cheese, you are participating in: the forced pregnancy of cows; the separation of cow and calf; the killing of the male calves for veal; the horrible life of dairy cows (under the best or circumstances); and the slaughter of the cows at about age 6. Moreover, most cheese has rennet in it, and that usually comes from the stomach of slaughtered calves but comes from some slaughtered mammal in all cases. In my view, there is *******nothing****** I would want to eat that badly that I would participate in that. Its got nothing to do with whether I could find a good substitute.
