On foot of the Kilkenny County Council steam rolling ahead with the Central Access Scheme (CAS) despite the outstanding archaeological issues and against the wishes of a significant portion of the community - we are holding another PROTEST MARCH!!! Calls for another public demonstration have been overwhelming, in particular, due to the outrage when residents witnessed the felling of four 100 year old lime trees in the path of the CAS on 21st February. This shameful destruction was both concerning, as the fate of the medieval structure in Vicar street (also in CAS path) has not yet been determined and sickening on a week when, in the aftermath of storm Darwin, the sound of chainsaws could be heard day & night making safe fallen and damaged trees, yet these four trees in the Peace Park were healthy & had survived the storm. On a positive note, decisions on Mays local election ballot paper are becoming increasingly easy, as some of those touting for re-election continue to display a shocking disregard for public sentiment and ignorance of what the central access scheme actually entails. A local Councillor stopped off by the Peace Park to inspect the destruction, when approached on the topic, said its all progress and we have to move with the times! Another Councillor erroneously believes that “The completion of the replacement bridge for Greens bridge will help to alleviate traffic in Kennyswell and the Circular road in 2015, demonstrating a lack of knowledge regarding the scheme’s route, local geography and current traffic patterns. We are almost done distributing 5,000 flyers for the march and the goodwill has been fantastic. Many in Kilkenny proudly display our car stickers too! Even if you cannot make it, please encourage others to go along and be sure to let your local election candidates know how you feel when they come knocking. Many Kilkenny councillors going for re-election remain ignorant of the devastating impact the CAS will have on community, heritage and the environment in Kilkenny city. As for the march, it will be the same route as last time, from the Peace Park (beside old swimming pool), through Irishtown, up High Street and finishing on the Parade. Gather at the Peace Park from 12.30pm for a 1pm kick-off on SATURDAY 22nd MARCH. We want this protest to be better, bigger and louder than the last one to show the Council that an increasing number of people from near & far do not want this, so please come along and bring your friends, neighbours and colleagues!!! Roll on the 22nd!
