On his first trip and first night in New York City, Bernie Taupin - TopicsExpress

On his first trip and first night in New York City, Bernie Taupin heard a gunshot outside of his hotel room which gave him the idea for this song. It was also partly inspired by a line in Ben E. Kings song Spanish Harlem, there is a rose in New York City to which Taupin counters and writes: And now I know, Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say. I thought I knew, but now I know that rose trees never grow in New York City This song was dedicated to those who died and to those who helped, the police, fire department, emt, and everyone involved in the 9/11 aftermath at a benefit concert at Madison Square Garden in October of 2001. What a great song and what a great tribute to all those affected by 9/11. Ill forever think of this song when i think of 9/11.
