On how reports like those of Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Nielsen, ASSOCHAM and McKinsey doesn’t account for is detailed demographics, which has bedevilled marketers in India for as long as marketing has been around. Their own definitions of what rural India comprises of significantly varies from that of the Census definition. Yet, they go ahead with the Census stat of 70 percent of India is rural hence contributing to the mythmaking that rural India is catching up with the urban and hence is a huge potential market while the stats clearly say otherwise. While there is no doubt that rural incomes have gone up often the result of cash repatriations and repatriation banking, in which money is sent back home to be banked back home there are no statistics to show exactly how much of the new rural ‘richness’ is the result of sustainable self-earnings. tehelka/rural-prosperity-how-rural-india-is-catching-up-with-urban-india/#.U_nm4_kcfIU
