On my FB news feed I saw a link to yet another article stating that there are no health benefits in eating organic food in preference to conventional. Prior to the so-called Green Revolution which industrialised food crops in the mid 20th century, conventional food was organic and free range. Instead of naming the alternative to organic, conventional, it is more accurate to name it industrial; and it is not just a question of what is healthier to eat, but the long term viability of industrial farming; after all, industrial farming practice has been associated with algal blooms in waterways from fertiliser run-off, irrigation has caused salination and manipulation and damming of rivers for irrigation has also had serious repercussions. Without doubt, the industrialisation of agriculture made food cheaper, but conversely it was far from being the boon it promised to be to primary producers, which is why so many farmers have turned their back on the industrial model, and are trying to find a new one where they could reduce their dependence on poisons, and where nature was an ally rather than an enemy to be destroyed. I am not religious about eating organic food, but where possible I do preference organic and free range food when shopping, the relative healthiness of organic over non-organic is really only a side point for me. geography.about/od/globalproblemsandissues/a/greenrevolution.htm
