On my bike a few minutes ago, I was riding on the line between the through lane and the on-ramp lanes to the freeway, the legal way of indicating that I was moving forward and would not be jutting out unexpectedly in front of someone who was planning on turning right. So some jackass decides the thing to do is roar up behind me and honk multiple times, so as to express his annoyance that I was somehow in the way of his getting in the lane to the freeway. I glared at him as he swerved around me, got into the on-ramp lane and then, without warning, lurched out of it and continued down the street to the gas station on the corner. As I approached the gas station, he was straddling the sidewalk, halfway on the street, halfway on the gas station asphalt, a big gas tanker blocking his way. So as I rode past I stopped and said, none too politely, “Hey, asshole, what’s the problem?” He said nothing, offering only a sheepish shrug and a “Sorry.” So I continued: “The next time you ride up behind some cyclist and honk your goddamn horn, and he ends up swerving into you or some other traffic because you scared him, you’ll really be sorry. And try figuring out where you’re going before you get all pissed off about somebody who’s supposedly in your way!” Happy Monday, everybody!
