On my soapbox I had a conversational recently with a friend who I consider fairly intelligent in most matters—that is until the conversation began about ways to improve education. He’s still fairly intelligent, he just didn’t know what he was talking about. He got off on the wrong foot by telling me how far behind the rest of the world the U.S. educational system is. Which brings me to my point and rant: the first step in improving our educational system has to be to stop comparing ours to everyone else’s. It’s like comparing sandpaper to silk. The United States attempts to educate all children—most of the world, and that includes the ones at the top tier of the educational system, select who they are going to educate—the bright ones. The others go to trade schools. If we only attempted to educate only the gifted students we’d be up there with the top countries, but since we don’t, then don’t compare us. And thus ends my rant.
