On my way to Nairobi for KNUT ADC. As we await for a bus from a sister branch to pick us up at Barngetuny Plaza in Eldoret, a middle aged man approaches me as I make a phone call. He is clad in a faded jeans, red tshirt and a black jacket with white stripes. I also note the dirty sports shoes and a red cap. Ill call you back shortly,Dan. I told my calller on the other end and promptly put my smart phone to safety. Nikusaidiaje bana? I asked looking straight into his blood shot eyes. Brother, he started, si kwa ubaya, nilitaka nikuombe. Naomba uniskize. I nod in approval.Reading the sign,he continued. Brother, mimi naitwa Joseph Ndungu (his last name has betrayed him,I thought). Mimi naugua Ukimwi. Nimetoka hii hospitali yetu ya rufaa (pointing towards the general direction of the hospital). Nimetoka kuchukua dawa (produces two white plastic bottles from a black polythene bag and shakes them a few centimetres from my face). Siombi pesa mingi, nisaidie 20 bob tu nikule lunch. Nina njaa sana bro. I thought for a while trying where to place him; a con or a genuine kenyan who needs help. I swept my eyes from his head to toes and dicided to help him. But no! I dont have loose money. I fumble through my pocket . The least note is 500/=. I hand it over to him with a smile. He kneels down. Starts crying and asking God to bless me. I hold his hand and help him up wishing him well just as my ride pulled over. I borded the bus as he waved shouting safari njema bro. Call it what you want but I did help.
