On my way to Ukestra last night I listened to the Legal Hour on - TopicsExpress

On my way to Ukestra last night I listened to the Legal Hour on ABC Radio. A fellow called John Dowd was talking about the Asylum Seeker issue on the high seas and the transfer back to the Sri Lankan Navy. This bloke is the Chancellor of Southern Cross University, a former NSW Attorney General, a Federal Court Judge and the President of the Australian Council of Jurists. He was saying that the acts carried out by our Government ARE illegal. Due process was not afforded to the asylum seekers in clear breach of our obligations under several pieces of legislation, and that interfering with them on the high seas (they were NOT in Australian Territorial Waters) is a clear breach of International Law. He went on to say that the Commission of Jurists are gathering statements from asylum seekers and those that have been through the system, in anticipation of the Australian Government being held to account in the Hague. If a bloke with Dowds qualifications goes on National Radio and makes these statements, thats good enough for me. This is a clear indication that we have not heard the last about this issue. Shame Coalition Voters...SHAME ON YOU!
