On non financial rewards/ q: Has the frequency and nature of non-financial reward use changed at all in recent years? If so, how? A: This is just my observation – I don’t have hard data to support this – but it seems to me that companies are getting smarter about this, and being more targeted in what they offer. In years past, companies tended to hand out what I think of as “happy face” incentives: feature someone’s picture in the company newsletter, have a pizza party. These things weren’t very focused on rewarding or incenting specific behavior, and they weren’t crafted with much sense of potential benefit to the company. Now, though, that’s changing. For example, if you offer a junior person an opportunity to participate in an internal mentoring program as a reward for their performance, that’s much more specifically useful to both the company and the employee, and therefore more meaningful to everyone.
