On one hand, facebook itself has become something of a threat -- - TopicsExpress

On one hand, facebook itself has become something of a threat -- its inserted itself and various 3-letter US government agencies into all of our private lives, but on the other...if you use facebook to post pictures of cats or political polemics and theres an actual emergency in your life, and your friends are all right there, ready to help, ready to at least know whats going on and worried, available for you to get ahold of...and you opt not to keep them informed, I think that reflects poorly on you. If youre a close friend with access to someones facebook...and you choose to intentionally post no-content status updates instead of actually keeping friends informed on life-or-death matters concerning them...I think that *definitely* reflects poorly on you. Theres a few people I would be tempted to book a flight across Canada to make sure they havent been kidnapped if they stop being active online, or if cryptic, no-content status messages came up under their name. However, maybe there needs to be a better way of handling these kinds of situations that doesnt default to if youre physically proximate, then you can be in the know about the people you care about otherwise youre not important. The situation is very frustrating, though, and maybe its better to sort out the protocol for handling it *before* it comes up more.
