On our way to the Green Door sweet shop, Anika and I just joined a protest in Sedbergh outside Barclays against the banks. There was a big crowd and we all shook our fists in anger as the Westmorland Gazette photographer stopped the traffic on main street to get a picture of the Sedbergh multitudes in protest. Five years on from the bailout of the banks by the tax payers, which led to hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs and to our society suffering from austerity policies, the bankers went on to join the richest 1 per cent of the worlds population owning almost half of all global wealth. And then despite the huge government bailout the banks failed to support economic growth by lending to businesses and instead used the taxpayers money to fight against further restrictions planned by the government. Well worth protesting against - it was only as I was leaving that I found out my Sedbergh comrades were protesting against the closure of the last two remaining banks in Sedbergh.
