On the 9th of July 150 years ago this week John Hunt Morgan’s “Great” cavalry raid ended at the strategic R/R junction of Vernon Indiana. An armed force of Dearborn County farmers and shopkeepers, with a platoon of Michigan sharpshooters, and one battery, all numbering fewer than 1,000 men refused to surrender to a force of almost 5,000 battle hardened Confederates with artillery. The Vernon junction was saved; Morgan was routed for the next several hundred miles on a retreat that destroyed his div. without causing much damage, and the Aurora battery that borrowed cannons from Lawrenceburg refused to give them back because they were the ones that dragged them all over countryside in the July heat.
