On the Journey Toward Home I was 19 years old, a sophomore a the U of Iowa (Go Hawkeyes!), and living in Hillcest dormitorty. Id gotten involved in an investigative Bible study on my dorm floor. Why? Mostly I dont really know, except that I felt sorry for the fella that was handing out the questionaires when I registered for classes that fall. It asked if I would be interested in joining a Bible study if they started one on my dorm floor. Bible studies and college dormitories seemed light-years apart to me, but I said yes....never expecting anything to come of it. Well, something did! A lot of something!! In fact, my involvement in that little investigative Bible study with 3 other guys radically changed the trajectory of my life. I realized within the framework of that interactive time discussing various passages in the Bible that although Id grown up going to church, Id never really made a personal decision to open my life to Jesus....and that I needed a Savior. Well, Ill tell ya what, on Oct 31, 1971 (Halloween night)....I made a life-changing choice....a choice to follow Jesus. I wasnt at all sure what that meant or would mean, but I knew I needed Him. For the next couple of years, the dude who was leading the investigative study took me under his wing, showing me the ropes of what it meant to walk with Jesus. He got me into ongoing Bible study, Scripture memory, a Bible preachin church, learning to share my faith with others, morning quiet times in the Word....all that. He was actually with a campus ministry that specialized in that sort of follow up....an organization called The Navigators. I actually joined the staff of The Navigators myself after graduating from college and working for a couple years in the corporate world. Served for 20 years, helping college kids come to know Jesus and grow their roots deeply down into Him. Halloween night marked my spiritual birthday...the night I was born again into His Kingdom. Sbeen 42 years since that 19 year old boy in room 101 Hillcrest dorm opened His heart to the most important relationship a human being can ever have....Jesus.
