On the Necessity of Being Offensive Commentary by Captain Paul Watson I am not going to say the things some people may wish to hear. I am not going to decline to act, because some people may disagree with me. I am a biocentric, deep ecological conservation activist. I am here to make waves. I’m here to rock the boat. Sometimes I sink a few. I’m not here to be popular. I’m not here to collect friends. I am not here to compromise. I am here to say things some people don’t wish me to say. I’m here to do things some people find objectionable. Im here to make people think and hopefully to inspire some people to act. Some people have commented that they find me and my actions offensive. That does not bother me. And the threats I receive are merely compliments. The best defense is a good offense and thus I find being offensive to be strategic in many cases. If anyone finds me to be unacceptably offensive, there is a simple solution. Unfriend me. And if some people feel it is necessary to post rude, disrespectful and insulting comments, be my guest. I expect to be insulted. Your words will not bother me but I will exercise my option to ban you from this page and delete your comments. Not if you disagree with me but if you disagree with me in an insulting, rude and disrespectful manner. This page also has a filter that automatically bans comments that are racist in nature. So if you use the derogatory word for the Japanese people or any other people, your comment will simply not appear. Let me be plain – I don’t discriminate on the basis of race or nationality. I oppose all people anywhere and for any reason, who inflict pain and death upon living sentient beings. I don’t see Japanese, Norwegian, Faeroese whalers, I see whalers. I am a deep ecologist, and a biocentrist. I believe in, and try to live within the boundaries of the basic laws of ecology. I do not believe humans are superior to other species. As Earthlings we are all equal for only in diversity can we survive. I have one very imperative message that guides my actions – If the Ocean dies, we die! After four decades of activism I am happy to see that the organization I created in 1977 has now become a global movement and there are so many people in Sea Shepherd leadership positions. Every day I awake to hear about Sea Shepherd actions, and events in dozens of countries being organized and led by so many wonderful people. Nothing can stop a movement and thus I believe Sea Shepherd with our philosophy of non-violence action and the encouragement of individual initiative will flourish. I believe that we can change the world through passion, courage and imagination. And for those pessimists who say we are fighting a lost cause, well, the truth is that the only causes really worth fighting for are lost causes. Because I believe and have always believed that the solution to overcoming an impossible situation is to make the impossible – possible!
