On the Town: Post-Sandy, Oceanside Park Improved August 29, 2013 at 11:32am Among the victims devastated by Hurricane Sandy were our parks. One of them - Oceanside Town Park - will soon be back and better than ever. Recently, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and I unveiled plans to construct a new 350 x 225 foot regulation turf soccer & lacrosse field in the southeast corner of Oceanside Park. Work is now well under way, with completion scheduled prior to this fall’s season. The beauty of the turf field goes well beyond its magnificent appearance. You don’t have to seed it, sod it, drain it, cut it or line it. This eliminates the cost of yearly maintenance. Comprised of soft, durable grass-like fibers, the turf field has state-of-the-art cushioning and traction,as well as an exceptional drainage system. It, in fact, saves money over time. Configured and lined for both soccer and lacrosse, the field will be home to the 1,700-player Oceanside United Soccer Club. The Town of Hempstead Lacrosse Academy will also use the new turf field for its annual July instructional clinic beginning in 2014. At Oceanside Park, the turf field is the second to be installed by LandTek Group of Amityville. The first was the football/baseball field put in four years ago at Seaman’s Neck Park in Seaford. MetLife Stadium, home to the New York Jets and Giants, is also among LandTek’s most prominent field installation projects. Additionally, the group has constructed turf fields at numerous Long Island high schools and colleges. While the field comes in at an approximate cost of $720,000, the contract calls for three years of maintenance by LandTek. Sandy wrecked havoc throughout our communities…and this beautiful new athletic field will make Oceanside Park better than before. It’s just another major post-Sandy improvement that the Town of Hempstead is providing its residents. Anthony J. Santino is the Hempstead Town Senior Councilman representing District 4. Town of Hempstead Councilmatic District 4 will include the communities of Barnum Island, Bay Park, East Rockaway, Harbor Isle, Hewlett, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Island Park, Lynbrook, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, South Hempstead, Woodsburgh and portions of Cedarhurst, Malverne, North Lynbrook, Woodmere and Valley Stream in January 2013.
