On the border crisis: Bullshit. Yes, bullshit. Those of you of a similar age as me may remember a certain charismatic President who held office for 4/5ths of the 1980s. Those of you of *any* age above ten know that he is lauded as a hero of the Republican Party. What you may *not* recall is that Pres. Ronald Reagan pushed through reforms that resulted in amnesty for three million undocumented immigrants. Three million. 3,000,000. The current border crisis isnt about three million immigrants of assorted ages. Its about roughly fifty thousand kids who have fled drug-fueled war and crime to travel hundreds or thousands of miles -- sometimes on foot -- to surrender at the border in desperation. This isnt a border crisis. This is a humanitarian crisis. And the crisis part of it is that so damned many people who think of Ronald Reagan as the greatest President of the past fifty years are unwilling to emulate what he did, show some humanity, and offer these kids asylum and amnesty. And the worst of it? I dont think for a minute that this attitude has a damned thing to actually do with the kids or the border. I think it has everything to do with stump speeches for the next round of elections. Its crass electioneering on the backs of children, from the party of family values. And I wish to the gods that more people would call them on exactly that.
