On the discussion boards this week, the idea of unchecked emotions and body language have come up as barriers to good #communication. One skill you can put in your human services toolbox is checking in with yourself. Technically speaking, youre coming into the NOW (as Eckhart Tolle would define it) or youre doing a moment of meditation. Either way, you become aware of how your body is feeling physically, whats going on emotionally, and where your head is mentally. This ability is vital and necessary for good communication. Here are some tools you can use to practice this skill: Headspace - a #meditation program you can download on your phone. https://headspace/ The program is free for the first 10 sessions (which are enough to teach you the basics) Eckhart Tolle - guided meditation video https://youtube/watch?v=1sQ0DTF2tAM This is a YouTube video (its really audio only, the pictures are simply to give your eyes something to do if necessary) of Eckhart Tolle doing a loosely guided meditation. He focuses a lot on the space between thoughts and words. Youll notice, if you hear him speak on a topic, that he always pauses - at first I thought he was gathering his thoughts, but then I realized that he was simply sitting with the #silence for a moment. (I admit it was infuriating to my fast paced mind until I embraced the concept and now I strive to be more silent more often!) Do nothing for 2 minutes - This website forces you to not touch your mouse or keyboard for 2 full minutes. donothingfor2minutes/ You might not think this is a long time, but in our fast paced world full of instant information - can you sit quietly for 2 minutes without watching television or looking something up or playing with your phone?
